✵ Materials You’ll Need
Yarn Recommendations
Yarn: Worsted weight (#4) yarn is ideal—easy to work with and great for beginners.
Fiber: Go for organic cotton or wool for softness, durability, and crisp stitch definition.
Colours: Use two complementary shades per square for contrast and texture.
Inspiration combos:
🌿 Forest green & cream
❄️ Smoky grey & pale blue
🌼 Yellow & muted lavender
Using two colours really makes your stitches shine!
Yarns to Avoid
Skip slippery yarns like silk blends or super thin lace-weight cotton—they can be tricky to control and might cause frustration. Go for something soft, smooth, and easy to work with.

🧶 Yarn & Hook Tips for This Pattern
Recommended Yarn
Try Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling Yarn in a light color. It’s beginner-friendly, doesn’t split easily, and the stitches show up clearly—perfect for practice. Plus, it holds up well wash after wash.
Best Hook to Use
Start with a G-6 (4mm) hook for worsted weight yarn. Metal or plastic hooks work great for beginners—they help the yarn glide smoothly.
If you're looking for a full set, the Yarniss Crochet Hook Set on Amazon is a great choice. It includes 14 sizes (2mm–10mm), has comfy rubber grips, and smooth aluminum tips to help keep your tension just right.

🪡 How This Square Is Worked
This square is worked back and forth in rows using pairs of double crochet stitches separated by skipped stitches, creating a beautifully textured, open pattern. Each row builds into the spaces between the pairs from the previous row.

Pattern Instructions
Foundation Chain
Chain 31. To adjust the size of your square, increase or decrease the foundation chain in multiples of 2 + 1.
Row 1
Make a double crochet [UK: tr] in the 3rd chain from your hook.
*Skip 1 stitch, work 2 double crochet [UK: tr] in the next stitch.*
Repeat from * to * across the row.
Turn your work.
Row 2
Chain 3 (counts as a stitch).
Work 1 double crochet [UK: tr] in the space between the first 2 double crochet stitches from the previous row.
*Skip 1 stitch, work 2 double crochet [UK: tr] in the space between the next 2 double crochet stitches.*
Repeat from * to * across the row.
Turn your work.
To continue
Repeat Row 2 until your square reaches the desired size.
To Finish:
Cut yarn, leaving a 6-inch (15 cm) tail.
Pull the tail through the last loop on your hook to secure.
Weave in all ends with a yarn needle.
Block your finished square to smooth out the edges.
Tips for Success with This Crochet Pattern
▶ Keep your placement consistent: Always work your 2 double crochet [UK: tr] stitches in the space between the 2 double crochet stitches of the previous row — not into the stitches themselves.
▶ Watch your turning chains: The chain-3 at the start of each row counts as your first stitch, so make sure to skip the space directly beneath it when you begin each new row.
▶ Check your stitch count: As you work, occasionally count your stitch pairs to keep your edges straight and ensure your square stays even and balanced.
✨Keep Going
Each row you add strengthens your technique and consistency. Don’t worry about small imperfections — they’re part of learning. Keep practising, keep stitching, and you’ll see your confidence grow with every square you make.
