Welcome to Part 26 of our Crochet Blanket Project!

This week’s square introduces you to the timeless technique of filet crochet — a beautiful method that combines double crochets and chain stitches to form delicate open and solid blocks. While filet crochet is often used with fine hooks for intricate lace designs, this pattern proves that a simpler approach with thicker yarn can be just as striking. It’s the perfect way to add lightness and texture to your blanket while practising precision and rhythm in your stitches.

✵ Materials You’ll Need

Yarn Recommendations

Yarn: Worsted weight (#4) yarn is ideal—easy to work with and great for beginners.
Fiber: Go for organic cotton or wool for softness, durability, and crisp stitch definition.
Colours: Use two complementary shades per square for contrast and texture.

Inspiration combos:
🌿 Forest green & cream
❄️ Smoky grey & pale blue
🌼 Yellow & muted lavender

Using two colours really makes your stitches shine!

Yarns to Avoid
Skip slippery yarns like silk blends or super thin lace-weight cotton—they can be tricky to control and might cause frustration. Go for something soft, smooth, and easy to work with.

🧶 Yarn & Hook Tips for This Pattern

Recommended Yarn
Try Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling Yarn in a light color. It’s beginner-friendly, doesn’t split easily, and the stitches show up clearly—perfect for practice. Plus, it holds up well wash after wash.

Best Hook to Use
Start with a G-6 (4mm) hook for worsted weight yarn. Metal or plastic hooks work great for beginners—they help the yarn glide smoothly.

If you're looking for a full set, the Yarniss Crochet Hook Set on Amazon is a great choice. It includes 14 sizes (2mm–10mm), has comfy rubber grips, and smooth aluminum tips to help keep your tension just right.

Tips for Success with This Crochet Pattern

Keep your chain spaces consistent – Uneven chains can distort the open squares, so try to keep your tension even throughout each row.

▶ Count often – Filet crochet relies on the right stitch and space placement. Counting your stitches at the end of each row helps you catch mistakes early.

▶ Use stitch markers for repeats – Mark the start of each 12-stitch repeat to make it easier to follow the pattern and maintain the grid alignment as your square grows.

Keep Going

And that’s it — your filet crochet square is complete! 🌿
This design adds a lovely touch of lightness and texture to your blanket, balancing perfectly with denser stitches. Keep repeating the pattern to grow your square, or mix and match it with other motifs in the series for a beautiful, varied look.

Take a moment to admire your work — every stitch brings your handmade blanket one step closer to something truly special.
